Mill Power Independence

Hargrove’s pulp and paper client chose to invest in highly efficient energy technologies to improve the outlook for long-term operations at the site. After conducting several studies with the Hargrove Team, they decided to install a combined heat and power (CHP) facility to supply electricity and steam in order to be self-reliant for these utilities. The scope included two new gas turbines with heat recovery steam generators in a Greenfield power island. Connecting to the existing facility included redistribution of the High Voltage power system, modification to the steam distribution network, new natural gas supply, and interconnecting piping and utilities. Our scope also included integration with and modification to site infrastructure. This project enabled the mill to reroute gas turbine exhaust to make steam for the plant’s operations, increasing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and allowing the company to invest more the facility. It was recognized by Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) for sustainability.

CHP / Heat Recovery Steam Generators

Hargrove is supporting the study to install a new Combined Heat and Power facility to supply steam and power to an East Coast manufacturing mill. This includes the engineering development to generate a +/- 5% Total Installed Cost (TIC) estimate. Equipment includes a new turbine generator unit with heat recovery steam generators in a new power island are included while the addition of absorption chilling for tri-generation is currently being considered in the EDR. There are two 22 MW gas fired turbines, two fired HRSGs and one steam turbine – 240,000 PPH of steam, 360 psig, 560 F, one 8 MW steam turbine, creating a total MW of 52,560 MW for the facility.

Chemicals Boiler Area Upgrade

Hargrove provided Engineering Design for the replacement of an out-of-service boiler and upgrade to the boiler area in a chemical facility in Alabama. This project provided a new 120,000 lb/hr boiler to replace the one out of service, brought a reliable supply of steam to the facility, eliminated the need for a water softening system, replaced a feed tank, expanded capacity of an MCC, and upgraded all outdated instrumentation and controls. This was a schedule-driven project that required close coordination between engineering and construction to accommodate a small window of opportunity to have the boilers out of service. Laser scanning was utilized to obtain as-built data. Members of the client’s team were in Hargrove’s office for close coordination on the boiler project.

Project Delivery/ Construction Management

Waste Heat Recovery Power Plant

Hargrove oversaw all details of project delivery/construction management for a new $125MM TIC power plant that generates 50-megawatts of electricity through waste heat recovery in Louisiana. Through the current manufacturing process, heat is generated and released through a stack, but the new plant captured the heat to produce steam to drive a 50-megawatt turbine generator to produce electricity without increasing emissions, including carbon. This provides clean power that is reliably generated from a proven, commercially available technology.
